Are You an International Student Looking to Apply for On-Campus Jobs?

If you are an international student looking to apply for on-campus jobs. Below are some necessary things to do:

I worked as a graduate assistant to a professor, library admin, and front desk at the admissions department, each in different semesters.

Don’t waste your time just applying through the university job portal; try to find the hiring manager and meet them in person. Not many people do this, and it makes you stand out, as it involves personal interaction. This is how I landed the front desk position at the admissions department and the library admin role.

Make a list of professors who can have a teaching assistant and reach out to them. Also, if you have taken a class in the previous semester and notice that the professor has a teaching assistant, approach that professor if they need someone to fill that role, as that student could be graduating.

This is how I landed my teaching assistant role. Even if that professor doesn’t need to fill that role, they may guide to another professor. (it’s the network you see!)

Reach out to your seniors; you can always get their help or at least learn what positions you can apply for.

There are plenty of roles on campus; it is just how you approach them that makes the difference. Choose your job wisely. I personally didn’t like working in the cafe, though you get free food – it just saps all your energy. After all, you are in the university to study.

Don’t just apply and expect to get the job; personally meeting them is the key difference. Look for jobs that actually help you improve your skills or at least provide space where you can finish some readings or complete some assignments.

Most admin jobs have this perk. If not, gear up and be proactive in the next semester.
