Quick Checklist – For Master’s Program in the US
When I first moved to the US for my master’s, I faced numerous new experiences and ways of doing things that required quick adaptation.
The short window to acclimate to this new environment can be challenging and also take a toll on your mental health. I soon realized that maintaining my well-being was crucial, and I had to find a way to stay grounded.
Here are some strategies and resources that helped me, and can help you too:
Monthly Self-Check-ins:
↳ Reflect on what you’ve accomplished and experienced each month.
↳ Identify activities that positively or negatively impact your mental health.
↳ Make adjustments to focus on what benefits your well-being.
Hitting the Gym:
↳ Going to the gym regularly, almost 5 days a week kept me going and motivated. Getting some physical activity can be therapeutic, and it helped me boost both my mental and physical health.
Attending Group Sessions:
↳ Group Hangouts for Assignments: Joining group study sessions or hangouts where you can help collaborate on assignments helps not only academically but also provides social interaction.
↳ Cultural and Social Clubs: There are multiple cultural and social clubs that can help you build a social circle, it does provide a sense of community and belonging.
Other Resources
↳ University Health Counseling: Most universities offer counselling services that provide support for mental health issues. If you are struggling to keep up, this would be a great resource to share your struggles and get some help.
↳ Volunteer Opportunities: Participate in volunteer opportunities on campus or in the local community. Volunteering can provide a sense of purpose and fulfillment.
Adapting to a new environment takes time and effort, but with the right strategies and support, you can manage the transition smoothly. Engaging in university resources and activities can make a significant difference in your mental health and overall well-being.
