Quick Checklist – For Master’s Program in the US

When I first moved to the US for my master’s, I faced numerous new experiences and ways of doing things that required quick adaptation.

The short window to acclimate to this new environment can be challenging and also take a toll on your mental health. I soon realized that maintaining my well-being was crucial, and I had to find a way to stay grounded.

Here are some strategies and resources that helped me, and can help you too:

Monthly Self-Check-ins:

↳ Reflect on what you’ve accomplished and experienced each month.

↳ Identify activities that positively or negatively impact your mental health.

↳ Make adjustments to focus on what benefits your well-being.

Hitting the Gym:

↳ Going to the gym regularly, almost 5 days a week kept me going and motivated. Getting some physical activity can be therapeutic, and it helped me boost both my mental and physical health.

Attending Group Sessions:

↳ Group Hangouts for Assignments: Joining group study sessions or hangouts where you can help collaborate on assignments helps not only academically but also provides social interaction.

↳ Cultural and Social Clubs: There are multiple cultural and social clubs that can help you build a social circle, it does provide a sense of community and belonging.

Other Resources

↳ University Health Counseling: Most universities offer counselling services that provide support for mental health issues. If you are struggling to keep up, this would be a great resource to share your struggles and get some help.

↳ Volunteer Opportunities: Participate in volunteer opportunities on campus or in the local community. Volunteering can provide a sense of purpose and fulfillment.

Adapting to a new environment takes time and effort, but with the right strategies and support, you can manage the transition smoothly. Engaging in university resources and activities can make a significant difference in your mental health and overall well-being.

Doing these helped me with my overall well-being and mental health. What worked for you? Share your thoughts via email.
